What Is a Shadowban?
T'es invisible excepté to people already following.
Result : ta reach drops 80-95%. C'est like online death.
Raison 1 : Spam behavior. Si tu follow/unfollow beaucoup de gens (50+ per day), ou comment en mass, ou like beaucoup randomly — algorithm sees that as spam.
Raison 2 : Copyrighted content. The platform restricts your reach.
Raison 3 : Policy violations. Trop sexuel, trop violent, hate speech, etc. Shadowban est un warning before full ban.
Raison 4 : Use of automation/bots. If you're using tools pour auto-like, auto-comment, auto-dm — platform detects et shadowban.
Raison 5 : Hashtag abuse.
Raison 6 : Suspicious activity. Sudden change in posting behavior (like spdaing up from 1x/week to 10x/day), or linking externally constantly.
How To Detect a Shadowban
Sign 1 : Sudden drop in reach. And it stays low for days.
Sign 2 : Non-followers see nothing. Share your post avec ami qui doesn't follow you. They can't find it when search hashtags. But followers can see it.
Sign 3 : Hashtag invisibility. Posts ta content with hashtags. The hashtag counts stay stagnant. Usually hashtags climb as content gets engaged.
Sign 4 : Explore page disappearing. You used to show up on Explore pages. Suddenly poof, gone.
Test : Post a normal photo, wait 24h, check reach. Then using online shadowban checker tool (search "Instagram shadowban checker"). They test your hashtag visibility.
Fixing a Shadowban
Step 1 : Stop the behavior. If t'étais using bots, stop. If t'étais spam commenting, stop. If tu abused hashtags, stop.
Step 2 : Purge old content. Delete tes 20 most controversial posts. Or posts with copyrighted music. Anything that could trigger algorithm.
Step 3 : Take a 5-7 day break. Seriously. Don't post. This resets algorithms view of your behavior.
Step 4 : Clean hashtagging. When you resume, use 10-15 relevant hashtags (not 30). Ensure they're related to your content.
Step 5 : Manual engagement. Comment manually on other creators' posts (5-10/day). Like posts (10-20/day). This shows you're a real human, not a bot.
Step 6 : Wait 2-3 weeks. Shadowban lift usually takes 14-21 days. Don't panic if improvement is slow.
Prevention Strategies
Don't use bots. Ever. Instagram actively bans them. Manual engagement is slower but safer.
Don't mass follow/unfollow. Follow 20-30/day max, unfollow slowly if you unfollow.
Don't spam hashtags. 10-15 relevant ones per post, not 30 generic ones.
Don't post identical captions. Vary your captions. Platform sees copies as spam.
Don't use external links excessively. If every post links to OnlyFans, ça c'est sketchy. Mix it up. Sometimes link, sometimes not.
Do post regularly but not obsessively. 1-2x per day is healthy. 10x per day is sus.
Do respect copyright. Don't use songs/audio you don't have rights to.
The COVID Shadowban Period (2023-2024)
There was a phase quando Instagram était mass-banning adult content creators. Even non-explicitly sexual content was shadowbanned. It was bullshit.
Touts of people lost income during this period. Some le called it the "Great Adult Creator Purge of 2024".
The solution was diversification. Don't rely on ONE platform. If you're on Instagram, also be on TikTok, Twitter, Snapchat. Spread risk.
Platform-Specific Shadowban Behavior
Instagram : Most aggressive. Shadowban is real, happens regularly, takes 2-3 weeks fix.
TikTok : Less common but happens. If you're shadowbanned, your FYP placement drops. Harder to detect. Solution : change content style slightly, post at different times, wait 10-14 days.
Twitter : Shadowban is different. You're not invisible, but your tweets get deprioritized. Happens if you're reported for spam/hate. Solution : stop whatever triggered it, change behavior, wait.
YouTube : No real shadowban, but "demonetization" / "limited state" exists. Less urgent than platform shadowbans.
The Real Solution: Diversify
Best insurance against shadowban ? Don't rely on one platform. If Instagram shadowbans you, you have Twitter, TikTok, Telegram, OnlyFans, your email list, etc.
That why I tell creators : build multiple channels. 40% of followers on Instagram, 30% on TikTok, 20% on Twitter, 10% elsewhere.
If one platform shadowbans, you still have 70% of your audience.
The Mental Game
Being shadowbanned c'est stressful. T'es like "Am I done ? Is my career over ?" Ça c'est not rational thinking.
Reality : It's fixable. 3-4 weeks and you're back. And you'll be more careful.
What to do meanwhile : focus on other platforms, focus on email list (which no platform can shadowban), focus on direct relationships with fans.
This is why ownership matters. You own your email list. You don't own Instagram.
